Until recently, I had not been entirely aware of the breadth and depth of the museum field. It is an infinitely complex and incredibly intricate community bound by governing organizations and associations that seek to preserve and prolong the practices and existence of our beloved museums. Furthermore, many museums are regulated by local, state, and federal government. Ever heard of the Institute of Museum and Library Services? Well, that is the federal organization over museums.
Once I get the chance to transfer some money back home, I'm going to become a member of the American Association of Museums and Texas Association of Museums. Alongside state organizations, there are also regional associations. For example, Texas is under the umbrella of the Mountain-Plains Museums Association. Each have relatively minimal membership fees (cheaper for students), but provide tons of resources and connections for museum professionals. Plus, they look good on the resume...
FYI - I'm loving my first class. The readings are thoroughly interesting and insightful. I'm also discovering other people who are just as passionate about this field of study.
