As a student of political science and passionate follower of presidential politics, I've truly enjoyed watching both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions.
As a moderate, open-minded American, I must admit I was disappointed by the Republican Party's blatant divisiveness and platform of "get of Obama out." Even though I've researched their platform tirelessly, I want to hear them tell me what they will do! Four years ago, that was my argument against then-Senator Barack Obama. These United States of America can NOT afford to actively perpetuate an ideology of inequality and second rate citizens. If you're religious, feel blessed that you can openly practice your religion without fear of persecution. However, don't subject everyone else to your beliefs -- especially if your beliefs espouse hatred. Our government has a separation of church and state for that very reason. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof ...." Learn to "love thy neighbor as thyself."
As a broke college student weary of empty promises, I was encouraged by the Democratic Party's strong emphasis on creating opportunity, embracing unity, and supporting equality. Four years later, President Obama has grown and proven his ability. Although he doesn't adequately accept responsibility for the current state of the economy, he has actively worked to improve it. Remember, a progressive agenda does not mean an all-or-nothing agenda. All I ask of President Obama: Please keep your promises, follow through, and work harder to meet in the middle. Our country can't afford to be let down. We need happier days and optimism.
One month ago, I was an undecided Independent voter. Today, I am certain I am voting for President Barack Obama.
